Mission Statement

Camp Lakeside is a United Methodist Camp and Retreat Center where all people may come to recognize God’s presence, to enter in to, and to grow in their relationship with God.

General Statement

The camping program of Camp Lakeside is an outreach of the Great Plains Conference of The United Methodist Church for the purposes of providing experiences through which all persons (without regard to religious affiliation, sex, age, gender, etc.) can grow in faith, discover the power of community, and experience the world in which we all have been placed. A general requirement for employment is that staff must feel comfortable and supportive in a setting that encourages guests to connect with creation and seek a greater understanding of their relationship to the world. All employees must carry out their specific duties to fulfill the responsibilities of Camp Lakeside, the Great Plains Conference, and the United Methodist Church as a whole. Being of service to all people and extending the greatest degree of courtesy and hospitality to them is a very real and important requirement of Camp Lakeside employees.

Position Statement

Camp Lakeside is looking for an individual with experience balancing maintenance duties and administrative responsibilities. We seek an employee who understands and appreciates camp and retreat ministries and can relate positively to children, youth and adults; an individual who can welcome guests, volunteers and employees in a friendly manner to build community. In addition, we need an individual who takes initiative, has a strong work ethic, personal integrity and can see “the big picture” in order to complete tasks. The applicant should have a minimum of 5 years working in a maintenance-related occupation as well as organized camping or a closely related field. Knowledge of American Camp Association (ACA) requirements is highly desired. Essential Job Functions

Maintenance & Landscaping:

1. Responsible for the daily operations of all maintenance and landscaping duties in a safe, effective and financially prudent manner.

a. Tasks include, but are not limited to: lawn mowing, weed eating, plunging toilets, housekeeping, routine HVAC maintenance, painting, small engine repair, trash removal, etc.

b. Responsible for daily maintenance of the septic system and swimming pool (summer months).

2. Perform routine and complex duties that require a broad understanding.

a. Tasks may include: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical repairs to vehicles, commercial kitchen equipment, etc.

b. Maintain all sidewalks, roads, parking areas, signage, fences, hiking trails, etc.

3. Perform daily water tests to guarantee safe, clean drinking water.

4. Willing and able to use large equipment and tools. This will include: tractor, pick- up truck, 11 passenger van, lawn mowers, and hand and power tools.

5. Repair or replace equipment as needed, to safeguard employees, buildings, systems, and infrastructure.

a. Check all equipment prior to use to ensure safe handling. Clean and maintain all equipment after use.

b. Routinely service all equipment to ensure safe operations.

c. Train employees on the proper use and handling of equipment.

6. Willing and able to perform housekeeping duties.

7. Keep the maintenance shop, storage areas and other buildings organized, stocked and clean. Store all hazardous materials properly following OSHA and SDS requirements.

8. Coordinate all garbage, recycling and composting processes.

9. Winterize all buildings, facilities, systems prior to cold weather and then turned on for the summer season.

10. Ensure safe and efficient operations; assess potentially hazardous situations and make corrections quickly.

11. Report hazards to the Camp Director in a timely manner, offering resolutions whenever possible.

Administration:

1. Assist the Camp Director in processing and paying bills and depositing checks through established systems.

2. Monitor department budgets.

3. Proactively discuss concerns, issues, problems or questions with the Camp Director to keep clear lines of communication open to maintain a healthy and safe environment for all.

a. Make recommendations to Camp Director for the purchase of required materials and equipment necessary for the operation and care of the camp.

b. Request funds as needed to complete necessary tasks.

c. Develop priority work lists to improve the site. Include deadlines, anticipated budget, needed supplies and resources.

4. Follow all state and federal laws pertaining to lawful hiring of employees.

5. Assist the Camp Director with hiring, training, supervising and directing the work of housekeeping, maintenance and landscaping employees. Coordinate employee performance evaluations with the Camp Director.

6. Keep orderly records to ensure local county, state and ACA compliance:

a. Document all maintenance-both routine and unusual events- of all buildings, systems, vehicles, infrastructure, etc.

b. Create a weekly schedule of tasks.

c. Fill out the daily maintenance log.

d. Develop and submit an annual maintenance report outlining completed tasks, funding and resources used.

7. Develop positive working relationships with community-based businesses.

a. Be the point of contact for trades/vendors/partners doing work for the camp.

b. Coordinate all semi-annual and annual inspections, including fire suppression equipment, septic system, HVAC, etc.

8. Answer telephone and email inquiries from the public regarding reservations. Actively engage and discuss options with potential user groups to book events.

9. Develop supply lists, coordinate ordering across departments, receive items and properly store them. Inventory current supplies and keep a running list of needs, high demand items and plan/anticipate shortages in advance to keep stock on hand.

10. Follow all conference policies and procedures, as directed.

11. Act on behalf of the Camp Director during absences.

Hospitality:

1. Welcome campers and guests with a friendly demeanor.

2. Willing and able to talk to groups in order to welcome them, provide instructions or directions, and provide follow up before their departure.

3. Perform or direct the work of housekeeping employees. Actively participate in cleaning lodge, cabins, bath houses, dining hall, kitchen, office, etc.

4. Work in the kitchen and dining hall when necessary to assist food services with timely operations. Be available to employees in other departments, who request your assistance and expertise.

5. Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety within food preparation areas, bathrooms, sleeping units and meeting areas.

6. Provide feedback to the Camp Director concerning camps, guest groups and employees.

7. Encourage and recruit individuals and groups to volunteer. Coordinate and supervise work parties to ensure safety and completion of tasks.

Program Support:

1. Prepare for and participate in all staff trainings, weekly staff meetings and Site Council meetings. Attend Great Plains Camp and Retreat Board meetings, upon request. Lead weekly summer department meetings (housekeeping, maintenance, landscaping, etc.).

a. Coordinate and participate in summer staff training events.

b. Supervise, train and support fellow employees. Take corrective actions when necessary. Re-train employees as needed.

c. Communicate needs or changes to the schedule with the Camp Director and fellow employees.

d. Observe and assess staff behavior, enforce safety standards and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques as needed.

2. Receive maintenance requests from guests and employees, assess needs and resolve issues in a timely manner.

3. be available to camping and guest groups to ensure safe, enjoyable experiences.

a. Assist with use of sports equipment, facilities, campfire circle, etc.

b. Prepare a comfortable, welcoming environment for guests prior to arrival.

4. Proactively communicate with fellow staff members, volunteers, members of the public and

Camp Director to ensure smooth operations and encourage a nurturing, supportive camp community.

5. Willing and able to follow directions from Camp Director and remain flexible during times of uncertainty, emergencies, unforeseen schedule changes, etc.

6. Attend trainings to increase personal skills and stay current on best practices in the camping industry.

General Responsibilities

Benefits

Salary: will be at $40,000.00 per year. This is an exempt position that will require the employee to work outside of traditional hours of operation. When campers or groups are on site, this position will alternate being on call 24/7 with the Camp Director.

Insurance: the employee is eligible for all health benefits including medical, dental and vision services through the Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Retirement: the employee is eligible for pension/retirement benefits under the policies of the Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Vacation & Sick Days and Holidays: the employee is eligible under federal hiring practices, however conference policy states that non-exempt employees must work when needed. Vacation and Holidays will be coordinated with the Camp Director.

Housing: the employee will be given private, on-site housing. All efforts will be made to ensure a comfortable, appropriate living environment, at no cost.

Food: the employee is eligible for meals during camps and guest group activities when food services are provided by the camp, at no cost.

Professional development: the employee is encouraged to participate in activities appropriate to their position. Trainings will be paid by the camp, if funding is available.

Performance evaluations: will be conducted yearly by the Camp Director. Promotion by salary increase will be determined based on availability of funds.

In addition: Operation of the camp requires that the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director or other senior camp representative is available when the camp is in use. Care will be taken by the Camp Director to ensure the Assistant Director is given adequate personal time during the off season. It is anticipated that the months of May-September will allow very little time off, to ensure the grounds and facilities are ready for guests.

This position requires the individual to work outdoors in all types of weather, regardless of the conditions. This position requires daily exposure to extreme temperatures, physical labor and standing for extended periods, as well as exposure to bugs, snakes, bats, and other wildlife should be expected by the employee in this position.

This employee is also expected to follow all COVID-19 policies and procedures set forth by the Great Plains Conference Camp and Retreat Ministries Board of Directors and the Camp Lakeside Site Council.
