Meet Shades Mountain Baptist Church:

In 1907, Reverend William Sellers (known locally as Uncle Billy) lived near a developing area of town just south of Birmingham, AL. The area became known as Shades Mountain. Reverend Sellers, burdened for local children and passionate about the Bible, began a Bible study under a prominent shade tree. As attendance swelled, the meetings moved into a nearby schoolhouse. The Bible study grew into a small congregation led by Sellers that, for nineteen years, met in that one room schoolhouse. In 1911, four years after the first Bible study, the group formed White’s Chapel Baptist Church. Fifteen years later they held their first service in the new chapel and renamed the church “Shades Mountain Baptist Church.” Shades has a history of long pastorates. For the last seventy years since 1950, the congregation has had four pastors: Rev. Hugh Chambliss, Dr. Carl J. Giers, Dr. Charles T. Carter, and Dr. Danny Wood. The first Sunday for the current pastor, George Wright, was September 12, 2021. In 2002, after 40 days of church-wide prayer and fasting, Dr. Wood unveiled the 2010 Vision. This expansive and bold vision challenged our members to live on mission, give to missions, and participate in mission projects around the globe. It was a local and global missions challenge to the church in hope that by the year 2010 Shades would: have missionaries serving in all 24 Time Zones, plant churches in all 11 International Mission Board regions, do mission work in all 50 states, adopt a Strategic Focus City (NYC), and plant 5 Churches in the U.S. and 1 Church in Canada. In March 2002, Shades hosted its first Global Impact Celebration (GIC), a five day conference with more than 50 missionaries from across the world. This inaugural event radically affected the church body by allowing members to know missionaries personally and to partner with them in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. GIC remains an important event in the church calendar every February/March. When the goals of the 2010 Vision were complete, Dr. Wood presented Touch the World 2015, which combined evangelism with compassionate justice to address issues such as poverty, human trafficking, and homelessness. The great impact of Touch the World 2015 required focused work with specific partners in targeted places of need on five continents. As 2013 came to a close, Shades launched into a new season of active preparation for God’s next chapter of ministry. The Chapters Campaign set three goals to be completed by the end of 2016: complete the facility master plan, renovate older buildings, and pay off the remaining debt. When Shades “Turned the Page” to 2017, there was a blank sheet of paper! No facility issues. No debt payments. The church was wide open to ask, “God, what God-sized plans do you have for Shades?” The ”God-sized plans” included a greater emphasis on reaching and serving the surrounding community and expanding the church’s ministry to the 32 SEND Cities of North America. In 2018 Shades entered into NEXT… The Time is Now which centers around spiritual transformation and facility modification. Every member is being challenged to an increased level of bible engagement, gospel conversations, missions participation, and sacrificial giving. The church’s 30-year-old worship center was remodeled and reopened in September 2019! In the midst of this, Shades strives to be a church sending transformed people who influence their world for Christ. Since 2002, Shades has invested $38 million in the church facilities and completed the campus master plan while at the same time giving $42 million to missions.

Over the last 19 years, Shades has taken its missions efforts to a higher level:

Ministry in all 50 states.
Ministry in 80 countries and 21 time zones.
Average of 1300 people going on mission trips every year.
70 units and 205 people living sent in full-time missions.
Supported 15 church plants internationally and 38 church plants in North America.
Established a vibrant, evangelistic Chinese ministry with over 100 members.
Developed a strong partnership with Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, a predominantly African-American church in the western area of Birmingham.
There is a close bond between the two fellowships as we join together in mission projects and trips, music ministry, racial reconciliation, men’s ministry, and leadership conferences.

Adopted McElwain Baptist Church as a second location and changed the name to Hope Community Church (2020).

About the Minister to Adults and Men: The Minister to Adults and Men’s responsibility is to lead Shades Mountain Baptist Church in all efforts to reach and disciple adults in their 30s and 40s, provide marriage enrichment, and equip men as spiritual leaders. The Minister to Adults and Men Will:

Collaborate with the Shades Adult Discipleship Team to create a thriving and impactful ministry for single and married adults in their 30s and 40s, including Sunday School, small group discipleship, missional living, and evangelism.
Pursue growth with adults in their 30s and 40s by reaching unbelieving and unchurched families in the community.
Lead in the church’s efforts of gospel-centered marriage enrichment.
Oversee Men’s Ministry strategy for discipleship and service.
Provide pastoral care and counseling to adults in their 30s and 40s, ministry volunteers, and men of all ages.
Manage ministry staff and budgets.
Serve on the Shades ministerial staff, contributing to vision, mission, and planning for the church body as a whole.

What You Bring:

Education & Experience

Undergrad required; Seminary strongly preferred.
5+ years of ministry experience.
Experience in a similar role is ideal.
Experience in “triage” counseling.
